Privacy Policy

Last updated: 8 June 2026  ·  Effective: 8 June 2026

This policy explains how Finordle collects, uses, and protects your personal data. We take your privacy seriously and will never sell your data to third parties.

1. Who we are

Finordle is operated as a sole trader business based in the United Kingdom. For the purposes of data protection law, we are the data controller of your personal data.

If you have any questions about this policy or how we handle your data, please contact us at: aidan@finordle.com

2. What data we collect

We collect the following categories of personal data:

3. How we use your data

We use your personal data for the following purposes:

4. Legal basis for processing

We process your personal data on the following legal bases under UK GDPR:

5. Sign in with Google

If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name and email address from Google. We do not receive your Google password. Your use of Google Sign-In is also subject to Google's Privacy Policy.

6. University leaderboards

University leaderboards show the number of solvers per university — not individual scores or names. If you select a university from our approved list, your solves contribute to that university's count anonymously.

If you submit a custom university under "Other", your submission is held privately until reviewed and approved by Finordle. Until approved your university shows as unverified on leaderboards. We may contact you at your registered email if we need to verify your university.

You can change or remove your university at any time from your account settings. Selecting N/A removes you from all university leaderboards entirely.

7. Cookies and tracking

Finordle uses cookies and similar technologies. Please see our Cookie Policy for full details. Analytics cookies are only set with your consent via our cookie banner.

8. Data sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We share data only with the following trusted third-party service providers:

All third-party providers are contractually required to protect your data and may only use it to provide services to us.

9. Leaderboards and public data

Your display name and cumulative score may be visible to other users on the global leaderboard. Your email address, password, and individual daily game details are never displayed publicly. University leaderboards show only aggregated solver counts — no individual data is attributed.

10. Data retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal purposes. Newsletter data is retained until you unsubscribe. Analytics data is retained for 14 months.

11. Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the following rights:

To exercise any of these rights, please email aidan@finordle.com. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the ICO at ico.org.uk.

12. Data security

We take appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data including encrypted storage via Google Firebase, secure password management, HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, and strict database access rules that prevent unauthorised access to user data.

13. Children's privacy

Finordle is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data please contact us at aidan@finordle.com.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes by email. Continued use of Finordle after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
